Billionaire philanthropists found dead in basement under suspicious circumstances, police say

Billionaire philanthropists found dead in basement under suspicious circumstances, police say

Their bodies were found in the basement of their $7 million home in Toronto’s affluent North York neighborhood by a real estate agent preparing the mansion for an open house.
But as word of Honey and Barry Sherman’s deaths spread, neighbors, family members and people who had been touched by the billionaire couple’s philanthropy found themselves poring over the final weeks of the Shermans’ lives — trying to figure out why investigators had described their deaths with the word “suspicious.”
“The circumstances of their death appear suspicious, and we are treating it that way,” Constable David Hopkinson told the Associated Press at a news conference held outside the couple’s home.

Police released few details about the case or what led to their suspicions. Hopkinson said there had been no sign of forced entry at the Shermans’ home, but authorities have been otherwise tight-lipped.
Barry Sherman, 75, the founder of Canadian pharmaceutical giant Apotex, was one of the richest people in the world. Forbes estimated his net worth at $3.2 billion, good for the 12th spot on the list of the richest Canadians. He’d appeared on Forbes list of the world’s billionaires for the past 15 years.
And the Shermans were generous with their largesse, doling out tens of millions of dollars to universities, hospitals and the United Jewish Appeal, according to the Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper. Honey Sherman was a board member of several institutions: York University, the Baycrest Foundation and Mount Sinai Hospital. She had been chair of the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto and the Holocaust Education Centre.
They are survived by their four children, including one who just gave them a grandchild.
The Shermans’ sudden death brought swift condolences from the highest rungs of Canadian society and government, including from the organizations they had spent years supporting and from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Even people who weren’t touched by the Shermans’ philanthropic endeavors, such as their neighbors, said the Shermans were “lovely people.”
But Barry Sherman’s rise had not been without conflict.
Apotex, according to Sherman’s biography in the Globe and Mail, “revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry in Canada.” The company —  Sherman started it in 1974 after using his mother’s life savings to buy out a similar business started by his uncle — manufactures and exports generic drugs to more than 115 countries.
But Sherman’s gains came at the expense of larger pharmaceutical companies. The Globe and Mail obituary described him as a “ruthless fighter capable of waging as many as many as 100 lawsuits at a time against business rivals.”
[A family has searched for a missing woman for months. They keep finding other people’s bodies.]
“He was the bane of the existence of the branded drug companies in Canada. He was not their favorite person, but he was respected,” Paul Grootendorst, associate professor at the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
Some of the conflicts over the years were familial. For more than a decade, Barry Sherman had been involved in an acrimonious legal battle with three cousins and the widow of a fourth — sons of the uncle who instructed him in the generic-drug business that preceded Apotex. That uncle, Louis Winter, died suddenly in 1965, 17 days before his wife died.
At the legal fight’s lowest point, Winter’s sons accused their now-billionaire cousin of plotting to kill Winter, according to the Globe and Mail. They said he used handouts to silence them and that they deserved a stake in Apotex.
“Barry’s father died when he was young, and my dad took him under his wing and taught him the family business,” Kerry Winter, one of the cousins, said in filing the lawsuit. “It’s disappointing that we’re fighting this way now.”
[A family suspected a caregiver was abusing an Alzheimer’s patient. So they installed a camera.]
The original suit was dismissed in 2015 but reinstated a year later, according to Forbes. A judge ruled in favor of Sherman in September, but the cousins have appealed.
On Saturday, it was unclear what Sherman’s death would mean for the suit — or for his company. Sherman stepped down as chief executive in 2014, but he remained chairman, according to Forbes.
Now authorities are awaiting the results of his autopsy and trying to decide whether homicide investigators need to be brought in.

Lorenzen Wright’s ex-wife has been charged with murder in his 2010 slaying

    By Masta 17:02

Lorenzen Wright’s ex-wife has been charged with murder in his 2010 slaying

Police in Memphis have charged the ex-wife of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright with first-degree murder in his 2010 slaying in Tennessee, the Commercial Appeal reported Friday night. Sherra Wright-Robinson also was charged with attempted murder because of a previous attempt on his life. She was arrested Friday night in California and has a court date there Monday ahead of her extradition to Tennessee.
Earlier this month, Memphis police charged Billy R. Turner with murder in the Wright case. Turner was a deacon at the church where Wright-Robinson was a minister.
Wright’s badly decomposed body was found in a wooded area in Memphis on July 28, 2010, 10 days after he had last been seen. An autopsy revealed that he had been shot at least five times. During the investigation, it emerged that a 911 call had been received from his cellphone early in the morning of July 19, but dispatchers didn’t notify police until eight days later, even though gunshots could be heard on the call.
Police in Memphis reopened the investigation into Wright’s slaying in 2016 after receiving new information. In November, they announced the discovery of one of the murder weapons, which was found in a Mississippi lake about 75 miles east of Memphis, and on Dec. 5, they charged Turner with first-degree murder.
“We looked through this case and we did one thing, we followed the evidence and the evidence led us to Billy Turner and Sherra Wright,” Memphis Police Major Darren Goods said during a news conference Saturday. “We wanted to investigate it as if it had just happened. We went to the crime scene and walked in Lorenzen’s final steps.”
Wright-Robinson had told the Commercial Appeal in 2015 that police did not consider her a suspect in her ex-husband’s murder, an assertion police disputed. In 2014, she agreed to a confidential settlement in a legal dispute over how she spent $1 million in insurance money, which was meant to benefit their six children. Deborah Marion, Wright’s mother, told the Commercial Appeal that she believes Wright-Robinson killed her son over the insurance policy.
“Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! They got her! They got her!’’ Marion said Friday after receiving word that her former daughter-in-law had been arrested. “They need to bury her.’’

Wright-Robinson had written a fiction book, “Mr. Tell Me Anything,” that featured what appeared to be a thinly disguised depiction of her ex-husband. According to the Commercial Appeal, it told the “story of a deceitful, philandering basketball player who grows up in Mississippi, moves to Memphis, marries an older woman and becomes a top pro draft pick.” She also had told the paper that she had finished a sequel to the book in which Mr. Tell Me Anything is murdered.
Wright, who was 34 at the time of his death, was selected with the seventh overall pick of the 1996 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers. He played for five teams over a career that lasted until 2009.
